Canary Islands poet considered to be the forerunner of the modernist movement in the Canary Islands at the beginning of the 20th century. With a very short work, his poem "Yo a mi cuerpo" (I to my body) is considered one of the lyrical peaks of Canarian poetry.

He was born in Arucas in 1852, although his parents lived in Guía, where he spent all his childhood. In fact, his name already appears in the book of confirmations of Guía in 1853.

He began his early studies under the tutelage of the teacher Santiago Hernández. Later, in 1864, at the age of 12, he moved to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to begin his baccalaureate at the San Agustín school.

In 1870 he left the Canary Islands and travelled to various European cities, finally arriving in Spain, where he began his university studies in Law, a degree he began in Seville and finished in Madrid.

Until 1924, his poetry described themes mainly related to the rural world, especially depicting the environment of Guía. Subsequently, he gradually broadened his range of themes, touching on practically all aspects of life.

He died in 1929 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
